HERALD 3rd ECI workshop: Science communication and mapping a future road for ECIs

[HERALD LINK] Specialized training in science communication and networking for the ECI members and guests, by Dr. Simon Elliott and Dr Fergus McAuliffe(open session)

NETWORKING WITH HEAPS OF CHARM
  • What makes a good networker memorable?
  • How do they seem so carefree and engaging?
  • How do they keep the conversation going in those awkward moments of silence?
This hands-on interactive workshop focusses on our ability to communicate your research and work interests clearly and effectively across many audience types. We delve into body language and active listening to engage different audiences, in either group or networking situations. We share coping mechanisms to survive awkward or challenging interactions. Using theatre games and role-playing exercises, this workshop helps you distill your message, craft a short sharp pitch about what you do and provide you with the tools to keep conversation going.

- Group training session in RoadMapping the future of ALD research in Europe, working with the output of HERALD summit 2018 to find future roads for the ECI community
- Open ECI session, with focus on peer to peer interaction

We want the trainees to
  • gain advanced ‘theoretical’ knowledge input on how to write competitive proposals & manage EU-funded projects from an EU funding expert & Horizon 2020 coach through an impulse talk plus interactive proposal clinics.
  • find excellent, perfectly matching collaboration/ project partners during a welcome mixer.
  • exchange experiences with an excellent (female) ALD expert and with an industry partner.
  • transfer the newly gained knowledge into advanced ‘practical’ skills by
    developing joint proposal ideas,
transitioning specific ideas into concrete proposal drafts, and
    starting to write
together in smaller, matched collaboration/ project groups.
  • go home with a raw outline and concrete idea description, i. e. the first step of an actual proposal.

HERALD ECI event on Early Career Development

HERALD & ECI

The HERALD – Hooking together European research activity in Atomic Layer Deposition – COST action (MP1402) aims to structure and integrate European research activity in atomic layer deposition (ALD), bringing together existing groups, promoting young scientists and reaching out to industry and the public. In 2016, a network was formed within HERALD for Early Career Investigators (ECIs) to promote the next generation of ALD scientists and help them to establish themselves as research leaders in the ALD community. Broadening out the COST definition of ECI, the network welcomes investigators from within a year of submitting their PhD dissertation to PhD +10 years - however, these are not strict limits.

Program

In collaboration with COST action HERALD, Ghent University will host the 2nd HERALD Early Career Investigators (ECIs) Network event, which will be held on August 28-29, 2017. The aim of this lunch-to-lunch meeting is to bring together members of the network and exchange ideas and experiences on the challenges that come with establishing ourselves as a (prospective) research group leader. We have also invited some successful and established leaders in the field who will share their experiences and give advices on how to build a successful career path to full research independency. The meeting will offer opportunities for networking and discussions among the network members and invited speakers.

The Göta Canal (Swedish: Göta kanal) is a Swedish canal constructed in the early 19th century. It formed the backbone of a waterway stretching some 614 km (382 mi), linking a number of lakes and rivers to provide a route from Gothenburg on the west coast to Söderköping on the Baltic Sea via the river Göta älv and the Trollhätte kanal, through the large lakes Vänern and Vättern. (LINK)

We will to some degree favor applicants from ITCs (Inclusiveness Target Countries: Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Croatia, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, Montenegro, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Republic of Serbia and Turkey) and strive towards a gender balance in the travel grants.
